at Ormond Collective

The Commons at Ormond Collective, originally known as The Belgian Beer Garden, will re-open this October as Melbourne’s most beautiful garden café and wine bar, for every man, woman and their dog. 

The Commons boasts an all outdoor setting across four new retail offerings at their master venue Ormond Collective. The Conservatory, The Kitchen Garden, The Garden Café, and The Beer Garden are covid safe havens for social distancing and outdoor dining, within a whimsical, memorable garden event space, right in the heart of Melbourne.

Inspired by the great terraces and outdoor dining spaces of Europe and America – florals, gingham, ticking and stripes, oversized cushions, park benches and French café chairs, baskets bursting with Spring blooms, topiary and wicker will set the scene for a Covid safe outdoor experience – the garden has been specifically designed to create individual spaces, within a maze of established trees, planting and potting sheds.

The Menu

This joyful and eclectic space will be layered experience for guests – easy take away grab and go from The Conservatory, long lazy rose and summer spritz filled lunches in the Garden Cafe, or an easy meal in the Green Shed Beer Bar, all serviced using the herbs, salads, and veggies from in the Kitchen Garden tended by The Big Group chefs. The Commons is a site for every man, woman and their dog – yes puppy parking, day beds and a full menu for pooches is on offer.

The menu reflects the surroundings, comfortable yet exciting, classic flavours we all love but with extra magic. Simple yet delicious food using seasonal products and local suppliers, supporting Victorian suppliers and showcasing their incredible products and reminding people just how amazing Victoria is. Spring salad with seared salmon, a perfect burger and fries, Harry’s Bar toasted finger sandwiches, chicken caesar salad, Italian strawberry love cake and a full range of classic bar snacks to enjoy with Rosé all day.

Ultimate Chicken Sandwich

Chicken sandwich ribbons have always been a crowd favourite on The Big Group’s catering menu. Take the classic chicken mix, add zesty lemon homemade mayo, shredded broccoli and garden greens, sandwich everything between two slices of multigrain bread and you’ve got the best chicken sandwich in Melbourne. We may be biased but we doubt you’ll disagree.

Pretty Garden Flatbread

A crispy flat bread topped with confit artichoke with citrus, local mozzarella and topped with pretty garden greens and edible flowers from the Kitchen Garden – a visual artwork!

The Best Cookie You’ll Taste

Burnt butter, macadamia, dark chocolate and Davidson plum cookies – a classic but amplified by The Big Group. The cookie mix rests in the fridge for minimum 36 hours to let the flavours develop, the result being the perfect combination of a crispy yet soft cookie, with buttery sweetness, bittersweet chocolate and a sneaky hit of fruity sourness.

Small Batch Coffee

The best cup of coffee starts with the best raw product – beans roasted in North Melbourne and brewed at The Commons. Small Batch are dedicated to working consciously and meaningfully in a select group of countries, collaborating with producers closely to achieve the holy trinity: coffee that is exceptional, that has a positive social impact and that supports sustainable agriculture.

Programmed Events

The Commons was designed specifically to support not only The Big Group team, but their host of suppliers and the local art community as well. Every weekend, The Commons will host a line-up of ever changing activations – musical acts, gelato carts, floral stalls, local produce, even a Christmas market.

The Commons invites Melbourne’s most talented creative folk to have their moment on stage and remind Australians that the suffering events and arts industry is back, and The Commons at Ormond Collective is the place to find them.
